An end of summer rush of 12th Ave closures includes Rachels Ginger Beer, Mighty-O, and tiny Outer Planet Brewing
The closures of Rachel’s Ginger Beer, Mighty-O Donuts, and Outer Planet Brewing on Capitol Hill’s 12th Avenue have sparked concerns about the area's future. Rachel’s Ginger Beer closed unexpectedly before Labor Day Weekend, citing an expired lease, marking the end of its eight-year presence in the community. Mighty-O Donuts announced its last day of business after grappling with financial struggles and filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy due to over $1 million in liabilities. Outer Planet Brewing will close on September 20th after failing to secure new ownership, ending a decade-long operation. Rachel’s was known for its local roots, having started at the Broadway Farmers Market, while Mighty-O was a beloved organic and vegan-friendly doughnut maker.
Despite these closures, there are signs of new life on 12th Avenue, with new establishments like Mint and Martini and Colibri Mexican Kitchen opening recently. The community remains engaged, with the potential for revitalization following these closures. The fate of Capitol Hill's food and drink scene hangs in the balance as new venues emerge.
