Safety questions to ask your child's school SROs, staff training, locks, and more

Seattle, WALocal News

A mass shooting in a Minnesota school has raised alarms across the nation, with two fatalities and 18 injuries reported. Jim Fuda of Crime Stoppers of Puget Sound emphasizes the necessity for parents to ask their child's school about safety protocols, including the availability of school resource officers and security features. He insists that students should feel empowered to report concerning behavior among peers, which could prevent violence. In addition to schools, Fuda urges awareness in public venues like malls and churches. This year has seen 57 school shootings, with 15 lives lost, highlighting a troubling trend.

Fuda believes that police can effectively respond to threats if they are informed. He advocates for a community approach to safety, stressing that while such incidents are low probability, their impact is significant. Collaboration among parents, students, and law enforcement is crucial to creating safer environments.
