Barrio, an early player in the PikePine food and drink boom, to close after 16 years on Capitol Hill
Barrio, a staple of Seattle's Capitol Hill dining scene, will close its doors for the final time on August 30th after 16 years of operation. The Heavy Restaurant Group announced the decision, highlighting the emotional journey and gratitude for the community's support. Located at 1420 12th Ave, Barrio played a significant role in the food and drink boom in the Pike/Pine neighborhood, which was fueled by redevelopment efforts. Earlier this summer, the restaurant was listed for sale for nearly $400,000, with monthly lease obligations exceeding $16,000. Although Barrio enjoyed early success, it never became the dominant offering in the Mexican dining landscape for Heavy, which has since expanded to other concepts like Pablo y Pablo.
The closure reflects broader changes in the Capitol Hill food scene, where local restaurant groups have gained prominence. The Heavy Restaurant Group has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the decision to close despite having a lease. Barrio's legacy will be remembered as a vibrant gathering place for friends and families in the community.
