Le Morte DMeliora? Struggling restaurant that replaced the Canterbury hit by unpaid rent, taxes

Seattle, WALocal News

Meliora, the Capitol Hill restaurant that replaced the Canterbury Ale House, is grappling with significant financial difficulties, including over $30,000 in unpaid rent and more than $40,000 in state taxes. Since February, the establishment has been temporarily closed as it undergoes maintenance and enhancements, with a message promising an upgraded dining experience for future visitors. Sukhdaljeet Singh, a representative of the restaurant, has not provided further comment on the financial situation. Opened in summer 2023, Meliora aimed to fill a historic 5,000-square-foot space that once housed a tavern dating back to 1976. This transition followed a shift in ownership of the property by Community Roots Housing, which sought to revitalize the ground floor.

The building was sold for $5 million to real estate investor Bryan Syrdal and Tributary Investments. As Meliora's future remains uncertain, local stakeholders are considering the next steps for the ground floor food and drink space. Additionally, another vacant restaurant space nearby is reportedly under contract for a new owner, indicating potential revitalization in the area.
