As Seattle considers its next growth plan, The Sarah Queen set to rise at 23rd and Union

Seattle, WALocal News

The Sarah Queen project is advancing plans to replace the former Mount Calvary Christian Center with 112 new apartment homes and commercial spaces on 23rd Ave in Seattle's Central District. Led by Jaebadiah Gardner of Gardner Global, the development aims to provide a mix of market-rate and affordable housing options while honoring the legacy of Gardner's grandmother, Sarah Queen Gardner. The project, which has received substantial financial backing including a $4. 5 million grant from Amazon, will include underground parking for approximately 20 vehicles and may rise to seven or eight stories based on the review process. This initiative reflects a broader trend of mixed-use developments in the area, which has seen a surge in both market-rate and affordable housing projects.

As the city approaches its new 20-year growth plan, stakeholders emphasize the need for equitable development that addresses historical housing disparities. The project is positioned as a model for how for-profit endeavors can support community growth alongside nonprofit efforts. Local voices advocate for balancing the demand for new housing with the need for social equity in development. The upcoming public design review will provide further insights into the project's alignment with community goals.
