Spokane County Sheriff's Office sergeant hit and killed by motorcyclist on I-90

Spokane County Sheriff's Office Sergeant Kenneth Salas, 59, was killed on Saturday morning after a motorcyclist struck him while he was clearing a traffic hazard on I-90. The tragic event took place at approximately 7:40 a. m. , following the fall of a hay bale into the left lane. Salas, who had activated his patrol car’s emergency lights, was clearing the hazard when he was hit.

The motorcyclist involved sustained injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Salas dedicated 34 years to law enforcement, starting as a Corrections Officer before progressing through various roles, including Patrol Deputy and Traffic Unit. He earned the rank of Sergeant in 2009 and served as a supervisor for the Downtown Dayshift Patrol. The Sheriff's Office honored him as a cherished member of their team, and he is survived by his wife and extended family. The incident is under investigation by the Washington State Patrol.
