Thurston County sheriff doused with liquor, grabbed by throat after traffic stop

Seattle, WALocal News

During a routine traffic stop for speeding, Thurston County Sheriff Sanders encountered a violent suspect who resisted arrest. The driver, after fleeing to his driveway, assaulted Sanders by dousing him with liquor and grabbing him by the throat. The sheriff attempted to use a taser, but the close proximity rendered it ineffective. A neighbor intervened, helping to subdue the suspect, who was later bitten by a K9 unit, prompting him to surrender. The suspect will face multiple charges, including DUI and felony assault on a peace officer, following a warrant for blood testing for intoxicants.

His family informed authorities that he did not have permission to drive their work vehicle, which they needed for their livelihood. The incident highlights ongoing issues related to impaired driving and officer safety. Sheriff Sanders' quick response and the assistance of bystanders underscore the community's role in supporting law enforcement.
