SUMA Plans for 12th Ave Seattle University Museum of Art and Tulip on the Green moving forward

Seattle, WALocal News

Seattle University is advancing plans for the Seattle University Museum of Art (SUMA), which will open in fall 2028. A meeting of the Seattle University Hill Implementation Advisory Committee is scheduled for July 30, 2025, to discuss the permit timeline and amendments to the Major Institution Master Plan. Community concerns have emerged regarding the demolition of the Lee Center for the Arts, as students and faculty emphasize its importance for community engagement. The museum will host a $300 million art collection donated by property developer Dick Hedreen and will span over 44,000 square feet across four levels. Sellen Construction is set to oversee the two-year construction period.

The project aligns with Seattle University's plans for campus expansion, which aims to add 2 million square feet and 2. 4 acres by 2028. The IAC, composed of city-appointed volunteers, plays a critical role in monitoring the development of major institutions in Seattle. The influence of this advisory committee on the multimillion-dollar project remains uncertain.
