New memorial honors Ethan Chapin as sentencing concludes in Kohberger case
A new memorial honoring Ethan Chapin was inaugurated at Tyler Amaya's gym as the sentencing of Brian Kohberger concluded. Kohberger received four consecutive life sentences for the November 2022 murders of Chapin and three other college students, marking a significant moment in the case. Amaya, who coached Chapin since childhood, stated that Ethan's spirit continues to inspire him and the community. Donations to Amaya's nonprofit, Hoop for the Valley, have reached approximately $20,000, funding sports activities and scholarships for underserved youth. The Chapin family chose to spend time together instead of attending the sentencing, reflecting their desire for privacy and healing.
Amaya's nonprofit aims to encourage youth involvement in sports, mirroring Ethan's passion. Additionally, the Chapin family's Ethan's Smile Foundation has raised over $100,000, awarding more than 80 scholarships to local students. Amaya remarked on the importance of cherishing every moment and keeping Ethan's memory alive in the community.
