For first time since pandemic, King County Superior Court handled more than 5,000 criminal cases last year

Seattle, WALocal News

King County Superior Court reported over 5,000 criminal cases filed in 2024, marking a notable recovery since the pandemic. The backlog remains concerning, with just over 4,000 pending cases, significantly higher than pre-pandemic levels. Prosecutor Leesa Manion highlighted the backlog as a priority, noting a 5. 5% increase in filings from the previous year. Her office declined charges in nearly 3,440 cases, citing insufficient legal grounds in 40% of those referrals.

The number of cases referred to the prosecutor's office has decreased by more than 25% compared to five years ago. Increased crime rates have exacerbated the challenges faced by the court system. To address these issues, the mayor is proposing legislation to enhance surveillance in crime-prone areas. These measures aim to improve public safety and support law enforcement efforts.
