Mayor proposes adding SPD surveillance cameras around PikePine, Garfield High School

Seattle, WALocal News

Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell has proposed legislation to expand surveillance cameras in Capitol Hill's Pike/Pine nightlife district and around Garfield High School to enhance public safety. This initiative aims to address ongoing street crime and drug use issues that have affected the area, as reported by local businesses. The expansion builds on a pilot program that already includes cameras along Aurora Ave, 3rd Ave, and in the International District, with the Real Time Crime Center (RTCC) playing a crucial role. Since its launch on May 20, the RTCC has supported 90 active investigations and improved communication between analysts and officers in the field. The proposal also includes authorizing the RTCC to access traffic camera feeds at select intersections.

Harrell highlighted the importance of using evidence-based technology to bolster law enforcement efforts. The Seattle City Council will review the proposed legislation, which aims to create safer neighborhoods. The initiative is part of broader efforts to invest in community services and security upgrades in response to gun violence concerns at Garfield High School.
