Seattle City Council announces six finalists for District 5 seat after Moore's departure

The Seattle City Council has chosen six finalists to fill the District 5 vacancy left by former Councilmember Cathy Moore, who resigned effective July 7. The finalists are Bourey James, Katy MHaima, Nilu Jenks, Debora Juarez, Julie Kang, and Robert D. Wilson. The council has partnered with Unified Outreach to host a public forum on July 21, from 5:30 p. m.

to 8 p. m. at North Seattle College, allowing community members to engage with the candidates. Attendees can request interpreters, translations, or accommodations for disabilities. The council will conduct candidate interviews on July 22, with a final vote expected on July 28, where a simple majority of five votes is needed for appointment.

The new councilmember will serve until the 2026 General Election results are certified, ensuring representation for District 5 during this transitional period. This appointment process highlights the council's commitment to community involvement and transparency.
