Police arrest suspect for assault of journalist covering anti-ICE protests

Seattle, WALocal News

Seattle police arrested Jeremy Lawson for the felony assault of journalist Cam Higby during an anti-ICE protest in June. Higby sustained a concussion but expressed relief that Lawson is now in custody, believing his injuries could have been worse without his helmet. A video shared with KOMO News captured the moment Higby was attacked, showing him on the ground being struck twice before he used pepper spray to defend himself. Mayor Bruce Harrell condemned the violence, asserting that "the actions of a few bad actors will not be allowed to define our city. " The incident occurred during a peaceful protest against ICE's deportation practices, which Higby believes made him a target due to his coverage of Antifa activities.

Lawson's criminal history includes a 2019 guilty plea for criminal trespass and resisting arrest. The King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office plans to decide on charges this week. Higby hopes the arrest sends a message that such violent actions will lead to consequences.
