Trademark dispute brews as Nestl targets Seattle Strong for brand confusion
Seattle Strong, a coffee business operating in Seattle since 2017, is embroiled in a trademark dispute with Nestlé, which seeks to cancel its trademark on grounds of brand infringement. Founded by Evan Oeflein, Seattle Strong has gained traction in the market and received its trademark two years ago. Nestlé contends that the name "Seattle Strong" is too similar to its own Seattle’s Best brand, which has been in use since 1989, potentially leading to consumer confusion. Oeflein argues that it is unreasonable for Nestlé to assert ownership over the word "Seattle," highlighting the city's rich coffee heritage. His legal expenses are mounting, diverting funds that could otherwise support business growth.
Despite the challenge, Oeflein is determined to protect his brand and plans to expand into California and Texas. The trial concerning the trademark dispute is scheduled for next year, and KOMO News has reached out to Nestlé for comment but has not received a response. This case underscores the tension between small businesses and large corporations in the food industry.
