Microsoft announces 4 billion AI training initiative amid recent layoffs

Seattle, WALocal News

Microsoft President Brad Smith announced a $4 billion initiative called Microsoft Elevate aimed at training non-profits, students, and teachers in artificial intelligence. This initiative comes shortly after the company announced 9,000 layoffs, which Smith clarified were not directly tied to the AI investment. He stated that adapting to a changing workplace is critical as AI reshapes job roles. Smith expressed concerns about tax increases in Washington state, arguing they could hinder job creation and economic development. He highlighted the need for companies to prioritize investments in successful sectors while reducing workforce size in others.

Smith noted that the company has committed $80 billion to AI this fiscal year, signaling a strong focus on this area. He acknowledged the challenges of workforce adaptation but stressed the importance of preparing for future changes. More specifics on how the Elevate initiative will be implemented in Washington state will be shared later this fall.
