Census Washington's youth decline, seniors rise

Seattle, WALocal News

Washington's population aged 65 and older increased by 14% from 2020 to 2024, reaching 1. 38 million, as reported by the Census Bureau. Simultaneously, the number of young residents under 18 fell by 2. 5%, totaling 1. 66 million.

Nationally, the 65+ demographic also grew by 13%, while those under 18 saw a decline of 1. 7%. This demographic shift indicates an ongoing trend of an aging America, which brings significant economic and policy challenges, such as the increased need for healthcare workers. Delaware reported the most significant growth in older adults, with an increase of nearly 20%. The Census data reveals that 11 states now have more older adults than children, a significant rise from just three states in 2020.

As these trends continue, state and federal policymakers must develop strategies to address the implications of changing demographics. The need for a larger workforce to care for an aging population underscores the urgency of these challenges.
