A woman was shot and killed in a parking lot near Teto’s Cantina early Monday morning, prompting police to respond to gunfire reports shortly before 12:30 AM. The tragic incident overshadowed the city's 51st Pride celebration, which focused on supporting the trans community amid various challenges. Events included Friday's Trans Pride celebrations at Volunteer Park and a vibrant street festival on Broadway. Seattle Pride Executive Director Patti Hearn emphasized the importance of centering trans voices, stating, “At a time when our trans siblings are under attack, we are centering and celebrating them with purpose. ” This year’s Pride events reflect the ongoing struggles and frustrations faced by the community, especially in light of political turmoil.
Organizers aimed to reassure trans youth that they are loved and have the right to live authentically. Images from last year's 50th anniversary celebrations serve as a backdrop to the ongoing evolution of Pride in Seattle. The events highlight both the joy of community and the need for continued advocacy.
