Washington bucks GLP gender trend

Seattle, WALocal News

Washington's GLP-1 drug prescriptions reveal a notable trend, with 2. 5% of women and 2. 2% of men using these medications in 2024. This contrasts sharply with national data, where 18. 6% of women receive GLP-1 prescriptions for weight loss, a rate twice that of men.

The increase in GLP-1 usage among women in Washington rose from 0. 44% in 2020 to 2. 47% in 2024, while men's rates increased from 0. 49% to 2. 22%.

This data indicates that the state diverges from the national trend, where women, particularly those near menopause, dominate the demand for weight-loss prescriptions. FAIR Health's statistics show that Washington's male and female patients are equally willing to seek pharmaceutical help. Women aged 40 to 64 have been the primary recipients of GLP-1 prescriptions nationally since 2019, highlighting a broader trend in weight management. The findings suggest a shift in attitudes towards weight-loss medications in Washington, where both genders are increasingly turning to these drugs. This evolving landscape may influence healthcare approaches and policies regarding weight management in the future.
