Ham radio field day preps Seattle for disaster

Seattle, WALocal News

Seattle's amateur radio community will host a disaster preparedness field day at South Seattle College this weekend, emphasizing off-grid communication. The event aims to simulate disaster scenarios by utilizing only battery and solar power, without internet or cell service. Attendees will engage in activities such as long-distance radio communication and first aid training, all free of charge. Tim Helming, director of the Seattle Auxiliary Communications Service, stressed the critical role of ham radio during emergencies when traditional communication fails. The north field of the college will showcase various emergency-ready technologies, including solar-powered antennas.

This annual event highlights the necessity of being prepared in an area susceptible to natural disasters like earthquakes. The field day not only educates participants but also fosters community resilience. By equipping locals with essential skills and knowledge, the initiative aims to enhance emergency response readiness.
