San Jose mayor wants to clear homeless camps near freeways
San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan is advocating for the clearance of homeless encampments near freeways, proposing a partnership with Caltrans to expedite these efforts. He supports Senate Bill 569, co-authored by state legislators, which would empower cities to conduct sweeps on Caltrans property and receive state reimbursement. Mahan emphasizes that freeway encampments pose significant safety risks, as evidenced by the accumulation of trash and fire hazards. Currently, the city has about 3,000 beds for homeless residents, yet many shelters are nearly full, leaving around 5,500 people living on the streets. State Senator Dave Cortese points out the inefficiencies in the current system, stressing the need for improved coordination to help place homeless individuals into shelters.
Concerns have been raised by advocates like Todd Langton, who question the effectiveness of these proposals amid the ongoing shortage of shelter beds. The city is also exploring alternative solutions in case SB 569 does not progress. Mahan's approach reflects a broader challenge of balancing public safety with the urgent need for adequate housing solutions.
