Palo Alto looks to create new neighborhood on San Antonio
The Palo Alto City Council is preparing to vote on a transformative plan for the San Antonio Road area, envisioning a new residential neighborhood with 2,000 housing units. A pivotal meeting on March 10 will consider a three-year contract with Rami and Associates to guide the development of this 275. 3-acre site, which is critical for the city's Housing Element strategy to add 6,086 units by 2031. Mayor Ed Lauing highlighted the need for careful planning to create a sustainable community that integrates housing, biking, pedestrian pathways, and open spaces. The urgency of the project is underscored by state deadlines and the city's ongoing approval of housing projects, even without a finalized area plan.
Recent changes to the city's housing incentive program have further encouraged developers, allowing for increased height and density in residential projects. Notable developments include a 102-condominium complex and a 75-unit project, with more proposals in the pipeline. The city looks to Mountain View's successful neighborhood planning as a model for its vision, aiming to enhance economic vitality and community accessibility. As Palo Alto navigates this significant transformation, the focus remains on creating a neighborhood that meets the needs of its residents while fostering a vibrant urban environment.
