Oakland Stand Down event stands up for homeless vets, with two days of free services
The Alameda County Veterans Affairs Commission and St. Vincent de Paul shelter will host a “Stand Down” event for homeless veterans on June 27 and 28. This two-day resource fair will provide essential services such as meals, showers, legal assistance, and housing placement from 9 a. m. to 3 p.
m. at 2272 San Pablo Ave. The event's timing coincides with PTSD Awareness Month, addressing the high rates of post-traumatic stress disorder among veterans. According to a 2024 report, an estimated 9,450 people are homeless in Alameda County, with about 524 identifying as veterans. Of these veterans, approximately 330 reside in Oakland, highlighting the local need for such services.
Organizers stress that no one seeking help will be turned away, emphasizing inclusivity. The initiative supports Alameda County’s Vision 2026 goal to eliminate homelessness by enhancing service delivery for vulnerable populations.
