SF advances plan to renovate Kezar Stadium hosting Major League Soccer-affiliated team
San Francisco's Board of Supervisors approved a $10 million renovation plan for Kezar Stadium, paving the way for the Golden City Football Club to join Major League Soccer's Next Pro league. The team, founded by financial advisor Marc Rohrer and tech investor Geoff Oltmans, will secure a minimum 15-year lease with options for 30 years total. Kezar Stadium, originally built in 1925, has a rich sports history and will undergo significant upgrades, including a new natural grass field and enhanced accessibility. Mayor Daniel Lurie highlighted that these renovations will benefit the local community and sports leagues currently using the field. The club plans to commence play within two years, contributing to the Bay Area's vibrant soccer scene, which includes teams like the San Jose Earthquakes.
The renovations aim to modernize the stadium's facilities, including a new sound system and press box. This initiative signals a new era for sports in San Francisco, enhancing community engagement. The project aligns with broader efforts to promote soccer in the region.
