A Danish-helmed art oasis, perched in the Mission for over 30 years

San Francisco, CALocal News

Jette Vakkala, a Danish artist, has operated her unique art studio and gallery for over 30 years in San Francisco's Mission District. Located at 3341 24th St, her space combines elements of a Parisian salon, inviting visitors to enjoy free coffee and tea while exploring her whimsical creations. Vakkala, who has no online presence, emphasizes the importance of human interaction and conversation in her art, claiming that eight out of ten visitors stay for over an hour. Her recent focus on board games, inspired by historical pieces like the Royal Game of Ur, reflects her belief in the transformative power of art. Each handcrafted game piece is unique, paralleling the rare tulips that inspired her gallery's name.

Vakkala's journey began after a revelatory moment in front of Van Gogh's “The Blue Church,” leading her to dedicate herself to painting. Over the years, she has experimented with various artistic styles, including puzzle paintings and glass work. Vakkala's passion for art and community continues to thrive, as evidenced by the hours visitors spend in her sanctuary.
