Mayor Lurie Delivers on Key Commitment, Opening 247 Police-Friendly Stabilization Center to Provide Urgent Care for People in Crisis
Mayor Daniel Lurie inaugurated a 24/7 police-friendly stabilization center at 822 Geary Street to address urgent mental health crises in San Francisco. This facility is a key element of Lurie's "Breaking the Cycle" plan, which aims to improve access to behavioral health care for individuals in crisis. Run by the San Francisco Department of Public Health, the center provides an alternative to hospital emergency departments, allowing first responders to return to the streets more efficiently. It also supports Lurie's objective of adding 1,500 interim housing beds for the homeless. Lurie highlighted the importance of having professionals and resources available to assist those in need.
The stabilization unit will accept clients starting April 28 and will focus on various behavioral health emergencies, including severe anxiety and substance use issues. SFDPH collaborated with community groups to ensure the center positively impacts the neighborhood. This initiative reflects a shift in the city's approach to homelessness and behavioral health, aiming for long-term stability for affected individuals.
