City College of San Francisco selects its next chancellor as it works to keep accreditation
Kim Messina has been appointed as the next chancellor of City College of San Francisco, succeeding Interim Chancellor Mitchell Bailey. The board of trustees is set to vote on her contract on June 26, 2025. Messina's responsibilities will include overseeing a $300 million budget and managing approximately 40,000 students across six campuses. She inherits a college currently under a warning from the ACCJC, which issued sanctions in 2024 after CCSF failed to meet certain accreditation standards. Recommendations for improvement include empowering the chancellor to enforce board policies and developing a long-term fiscal stability plan.
Messina emphasized her dedication to creating a bold and inclusive vision for the college, focusing on equity and student success. Her appointment is significant as CCSF has experienced frequent leadership changes, with Messina being the fourth chancellor since 2020. She holds a bachelor's degree in Spanish from California State University, Sacramento, and a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of California, Davis.
