Mayor Lurie Takes Action to Address RV and Vehicular Homelessness, Restore Public Spaces in San Francisco
Mayor Daniel Lurie announced new legislation to combat vehicular homelessness in San Francisco, part of his Breaking the Cycle plan. The proposed law enforces a citywide two-hour parking limit for large vehicles while offering housing solutions for families living in them. Lurie proposed a $13 million budget over two fiscal years to support rapid rehousing, a vehicle buyback initiative, and outreach resources. Specialized outreach teams will assist individuals living in large vehicles, employing trauma-informed care and language skills. Lurie highlighted the initiative's dual focus on community safety and compassion, stating, “No parent should have to raise their child in those conditions.
” The plan also aims to reclaim public spaces, addressing the 501 large vehicles identified in a recent city survey. This comprehensive approach integrates enforcement with outreach, prioritizing dignity and well-being. By restoring public spaces, the legislation seeks to improve the overall quality of life in San Francisco.
