Rob Pengoo Casanovas is behind the strange animals of Geary Boulevard
Rob “Pengoo” Casanovas completed a series of 10 utility boxes along Geary Boulevard, featuring whimsical characters such as a whale with a monocle and a snake sporting a purple mohawk. This artistic endeavor is part of the Paint the City project, which involved 49 local artists transforming over 300 utility boxes into vibrant works of art. Casanovas, who identifies as a “light person,” believes that art serves as a source of levity and healing in today's world. His creative process was influenced by his previous experience living in a van, which allowed him to interact with the community and draw inspiration from those encounters. One notable reaction came from a woman with dementia, who found joy in rediscovering the painted boxes during her walks.
Casanovas remains active in the local art scene, participating in live painting events and exhibitions, including one featuring skateboard decks. His piece titled “Sardines Can’t Have All the Fun” reflects his distinctive style and vibrant use of color. Casanovas hopes his art offers a moment of joy and connection for viewers in their daily lives.
