New Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee Hopes For Safe Juneteenth Celebration, Asks Revelers Not to Repeat Last Year

San Francisco, CALocal News

Oakland city officials are prioritizing safety ahead of this year's Juneteenth celebration at Lake Merritt, following last year's mass shooting that left 14 wounded. Police Captain Gordon Dorham stated that a large number of officers will be deployed on foot, dirtbikes, and in cruisers to maintain order. Additionally, there will be more street closures compared to last year to better manage the crowd. City Administrator Jestin Johnson assured that preparations are significantly improved, aiming to avoid a repeat of the violence seen in previous years. The 2022 shooting, which involved gang rivalry, occurred during an unsanctioned gathering and resulted in multiple injuries.

Mayor Barbara Lee emphasized the importance of honoring the legacy of Juneteenth while promoting a peaceful environment. Official celebrations will take place on June 21, featuring various community events, including the Hella Juneteenth Festival at the Oakland Museum of California. City leaders aim to foster a family-friendly atmosphere that reflects the true spirit of the holiday.
