At the Potrero Center, some shoppers buy groceries, coffee and bagels. Others buy drugs.

San Francisco, CALocal News

Drug use is escalating at Potrero Center, raising safety concerns for shoppers and local workers. Manuel Diaz, a maintenance worker, described the area as increasingly unsafe due to the presence of drug users and incidents involving weapons. Maria Sanchez, who works at a nearby bagel shop, noted that drug use has become more visible, with individuals stealing drinks from stores. In response, the Mission Street Team has begun offering services, aiming to connect users with necessary resources. Santiago Lerma, the team's head, mentioned a rise in calls from residents about drug-related issues.

The team has met weekly to provide support, with some success in improving conditions. Mayor Daniel Lurie has also engaged with local residents to assess their needs for city services. The city’s response highlights ongoing efforts to address homelessness and drug use in the area.
