Exit interview S.F. planning director Rich Hillis likes all kinds of housing

San Francisco, CALocal News

Rich Hillis, who became San Francisco's Planning Department director in February 2020, reflects on his accomplishments during a challenging period marked by the COVID-19 pandemic and rising interest rates. He emphasizes the need for a variety of housing types, including smaller multifamily units, to address the city's housing crisis. Under his leadership, the Board of Supervisors unanimously passed the housing element aimed at streamlining development processes. Hillis created a community equity division to enhance neighborhood planning, particularly in underdeveloped areas. He acknowledges the ambitious goal of constructing 82,000 new housing units by 2031, stating it will be challenging yet necessary.

With 70,000 approved projects in the pipeline, primarily in eastern neighborhoods, he advocates for equitable housing development across the city. Hillis believes reducing approval times and expanding building areas are critical steps in meeting housing needs. He remains committed to working towards these goals, emphasizing that there is no downside to striving for them.
