Chaotic Swim Start at Escape From Alcatraz Race Leaves Triathlete Paralyzed, at Least One Other Injured
During the 2025 Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon on June 1, a chaotic swim start resulted in severe injuries, including the paralysis of 44-year-old triathlete Jose Perez. Witnesses described a disorganized scene, with nearly 2,000 participants jumping into the frigid waters of San Francisco Bay, leading to multiple injuries. Participants criticized the lack of safety moderation, noting that prior years had better oversight at the start. While race organizers emphasized their medical team's quick response, they did not address the broader safety issues raised by athletes. Perez's family has initiated a GoFundMe to cover recovery expenses, which has already collected over $75,000.
Additionally, the San Francisco Fire Department has been providing support to the Perez family. The swim leg of the race has a history of risks, with a past incident in 2013 resulting in a fatality. Despite his paralysis, Perez remains determined to walk again and teach his children to drive.
