A new Bay Area generation goes all-in on mahjong

San Francisco, CALocal News

Mahjong has experienced a 179% surge in events nationwide from 2023 to 2024, with San Francisco showing a 146% increase. This trend indicates a cultural revival as younger generations embrace the game, previously associated with older Asian diaspora members. Page Dudley from Eventbrite highlighted the role of mahjong influencers in promoting the game online and in real life. Nicole Wong, founder of The Mahjong Project, noted that the game offers a less intimidating social experience, especially in the wake of the pandemic. Community spaces like 13 Orphans in Oakland have capitalized on this interest, hosting events that attract both novices and seasoned players.

The den has become a popular spot, charging a $10 entry fee for access to food and cocktails while hosting coaching nights for 40-50 attendees. This revival aligns with the broader "granny core" trend, which also includes increased participation in activities like knitting and baking. ImagiKnit owner Katelyn Randolph reported a spike in demand for community classes, reflecting a desire for shared experiences post-pandemic.
