SFs Controversial Vaillancourt Fountain Deemed 'Hazardous, Now Getting Fenced Off to the Public
The city has fenced off the Vaillancourt Fountain in Embarcadero Plaza, deeming it hazardous to public safety. According to a 122-page report from Page & Turnbull, the 54-year-old fountain suffers from structural issues, including cracks and corrosion. Rec and Parks spokesperson Tamara Aparton stated that the fountain no longer meets seismic safety codes and poses a serious risk, which led to the fencing decision. Water has not flowed through the fountain for about a year due to a pump failure. Artist Armand Vaillancourt contends that restoration would be more economical, with estimates ranging from $12 million to $17 million.
The Page & Turnbull report suggests potential stabilization methods, though it does not declare the fountain beyond repair. The SF Arts Commission will ultimately decide whether to keep or remove the fountain. The situation reflects the ongoing debate over preserving Brutalist architecture in San Francisco.
