Fear spreads among SF immigrant communities as more ICE arrests reported

San Francisco, CALocal News

ICE agents arrested at least two individuals outside San Francisco's immigration courthouse, igniting a protest that attracted nearly 200 advocates. Olga Miranda, president of SEIUR Local 87, stated that there may have been more than four detentions, heightening fears in the immigrant community. Sabina Wildman of the Party for Socialism and Liberation stressed the necessity for community members to continue attending their court hearings despite the intimidation from ICE. Jovan Irigoyen, an employee at a local restaurant, expressed widespread anxiety about deportations affecting immigrants from countries like Mexico and El Salvador. Susana Rojas from Calle 24 Latino Cultural Center highlighted that the immigrant workforce is crucial to many local industries.

The protest led to the cancellation of immigration hearings, which advocates hailed as a victory, though the underlying fear persists. One restaurant closed temporarily due to concerns about ICE raids, reflecting the impact of these arrests on local businesses. Community members continue to emphasize the need for awareness of their rights and the importance of mutual support in a sanctuary city.
