S.F. police arrest dozens in 2nd night of protests against ICE
On June 9, a march against ICE in San Francisco's Mission District resulted in 92 arrests after escalating into violence. Initially, thousands gathered peacefully, chanting against ICE, but tensions rose when splinter groups engaged in vandalism. Police declared an unlawful assembly, which led to officers encircling protesters and using pepper spray on bystanders. Mayor Daniel Lurie blamed the unrest on these splinter groups, while activists, including Supervisor Jackie Fielder, condemned the police's aggressive tactics against unarmed demonstrators. The protests followed a series of ICE arrests in the area, totaling over 200 in just two days.
Earlier in the evening, the crowd chanted slogans, including “Trump, escucha, estamos en la lucha,” emphasizing their fight against ICE policies. The police response has sparked significant backlash from community leaders, who argue that such actions are unnecessary against peaceful protests. The ongoing tension reflects broader national debates over immigration enforcement and police practices.
