Amid ICE arrests, S.F. immigrants honored at City Hall for civic contributions

The Palestinian and Syrian business owner received an immigrant leadership award, acknowledging her contributions to the community. As Assil spoke to the crowd, approximately 2,000 anti-ICE demonstrators gathered outside, protesting against the Trump administration's travel ban targeting African and Middle Eastern nations. The event, organized by the Immigrant Rights Commission, coincided with the start of Immigrant Heritage Month in June. Attendees noted a blend of celebration and gravity due to the recent ICE actions, which overshadowed the evening.

Among the honorees was the San Francisco Rapid Response Network, which connects immigrants with legal assistance. Assil's message resonated deeply with attendees, emphasizing the need for solidarity in challenging times. Local officials, including Mayor Daniel Lurie, reaffirmed their support for immigrant communities during the ceremony.
