Cat dies, residents displaced as massive fire destroys multi-unit buildings in SF's Inner Richmond
A massive 4-alarm fire in San Francisco's Inner Richmond District displaced 35 residents and killed a cat early Friday morning. The blaze ignited around 2:30 a. m. on 5th Avenue, severely damaging three multi-unit buildings before being brought under control at approximately 4:30 a. m.
No significant human injuries were reported, although one firefighter twisted an ankle during the effort to combat the flames. Eyewitness Madeleine Buzbee expressed concern for her neighbors who lost their homes, highlighting the diverse community affected by the disaster. Fire officials noted challenges in battling the fire due to nearby overhead wires and closely packed buildings. The American Red Cross is currently providing assistance to those displaced, and officials are investigating the cause of the fire. Fire crews blocked off 5th Avenue for hours as they worked to ensure the area was safe.
