Day 87 at the 16th St. Plaza Lots of planning and working

San Francisco, CALocal News

Staff from the Department of Public Works and Public Health improved cleanliness in the 16th Street area this morning, signaling a community effort. Captain Santiago Lerma announced that residents will soon notice visible changes on weekends. Many neighbors remain frustrated with unpermitted vending along Mission Street, which transforms into a drug corridor during the weekends. Lerma characterized the situation as “an ecosystem that feeds on itself,” highlighting its complexity. He stated that while some areas looked better today, active drug users persisted on the east side of Mission Street.

The SFPD and DPW face manpower limitations that hinder their ability to manage the ongoing issues effectively. Lerma and his team are developing strategies to tackle these challenges. Addressing the situation is crucial for the community’s well-being and safety.
