Day 84 at the 16th St. Plaza Drug use on Mission Street rises

San Francisco, CALocal News

Drug use has surged on Mission Street, particularly noted by Santiago Lerma, the street team lead for the Mission District. Maintenance worker Juan observed the area as he cleaned the sidewalk, where drug users became increasingly prevalent over the weekend. By Monday morning, only a small group remained, indicating a shift in user dynamics. Lerma indicated that previous efforts to displace users had resulted in a concentration of activity on Mission Street. He expressed concern about the increasing numbers, stating, “We saw people returning to the street and using on Mission Street in particular.

” The absence of trash cans on Mission Street exacerbates the issue, as street sweepers are relied upon for cleanliness. The community will be closely monitoring the evolving situation and the response efforts. Lerma's comments highlight the ongoing challenges faced in managing street drug use and its impact on local residents.
