Day 79 of the 16th St. Plaza crackdown Stolen bins and unwanted guests at Mission Hiring Hall

San Francisco, CALocal News

Mareling Balladares, a program assistant at Mission Hiring Hall, feels increasingly secure walking along 16th Street due to a pilot program that enhanced police visibility in the area. This initiative, launched by Mayor Daniel Lurie, has addressed significant issues such as harassment and theft, which had plagued the office for years. Staff members previously locked their doors to prevent disturbances from unhoused individuals frequenting the plaza. Since the program's implementation, the area has seen less trash and fewer public disturbances, particularly in the morning hours when streets are cleaned. However, Balladares observes that by late afternoon, the situation deteriorates again, as people return to the alleys.

While she appreciates the improvements, she remains uncertain about taking public transportation home. The program reflects the city's ongoing efforts to tackle homelessness and improve safety for residents and businesses. Local stakeholders hope that continued police presence will foster a more secure environment.
