Rookie SFPD Officer Arrested for DUI Just Days After Academy Graduation

San Francisco, CALocal News

Rookie officer Ryan Kwong was arrested for DUI after a crash in the Outer Sunset that left five people injured, one critically, just two days after graduating from the SFPD Academy. The crash occurred at 1:59 am on Saturday when Kwong allegedly collided with a minivan at the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Rivera Street. The impact injured three occupants of the minivan, while Kwong and his passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Police arrested Kwong at the scene, and the investigation is ongoing as authorities seek witnesses. Supervisor Joel Engardio criticized the incident, asserting that "no one is above the law" and highlighting the need for accountability among officers.

SFPD Chief Bill Scott expressed his condolences to the victims and pledged that justice would be served. The San Francisco Police Officers Association also condemned drunk driving among officers, calling for full accountability if the allegations are proven true. This incident raises concerns as city leaders consider proposals to shorten the SFPD Academy's training period amid staffing shortages.
