Day 68 of the 16th St. Plaza crackdown We need a program, not more police
Brayden Haas and Quinn Wafer, both recent graduates of a drug treatment program, spend a Saturday afternoon at the 16th Street southwest BART plaza in San Francisco. Wafer acknowledges the constant temptation of drug use in the city, stating, “Temptation is everywhere. ” He finds motivation in the struggles of homeless individuals, emphasizing a need for supportive treatment programs rather than increased police presence. Wafer, who has faced near-fatal overdoses and required Narcan revivals, credits his recovery to family support and newfound friendships. Since their graduation, Haas and Wafer have actively encouraged others on the street to seek treatment and provided food, water, and coffee.
However, they also acknowledge the persistent challenges, as exemplified when a man approached them asking for cash and drugs. Haas remarked, “It’s so easy to slip back,” highlighting the fragility of recovery. Their experiences reflect the ongoing struggle against drug addiction and the need for comprehensive support systems in San Francisco.
