Young pro-Palestine protesters overtake the Mission, decrying the Nakba
Hundreds of young protesters took to the streets of San Francisco's Mission District on Saturday to commemorate Nakba Day, which marks the 1948 displacement of Palestinians. The event featured handmade signs, pamphlets, and speeches, showcasing solidarity among students and immigrant activists. Suzanne Ali, a member of the Palestinian Youth Movement, noted that their movement has gained strength in the face of recent deportations of student activists, including those from San Francisco State University. Protesters chanted as they marched towards Dolores Park, encouraging park-goers to join their cause. The demonstration occurred just two days after Nakba Day on May 15, underscoring the importance of the issue in contemporary discourse.
Organizers emphasized the significance of the Mission as an immigrant neighborhood, linking their struggle to broader social justice themes. The event concluded with speeches from students who recently participated in a hunger strike against Israel’s aid blockade. Protesters voiced their disillusionment with government policies and reiterated that collective action is essential for achieving liberation.
