One Person Killed In Bayview Hit-and-Run, Marking Sixth Pedestrian Death of 2025
A 47-year-old man died in a hit-and-run incident in San Francisco's Bayview district, marking the sixth pedestrian death of 2025. The collision occurred at the intersection of Bayshore Boulevard and Jerrold Avenue early Monday morning, with the victim declared dead at the scene. Walk SF, a pedestrian advocacy organization, noted that the intersection has a history of pedestrian fatalities, including a similar incident in July 2020. They highlighted the complex nature of the intersection, which connects local streets to US Route 101 and is part of the city's 2022 "high-injury network" map. The SFMTA is currently designing safety improvements for the area as part of the Cesar Chavez/Potrero Ave/Bayshore Blvd Intersection Improvements project.
The city recorded a total of 24 pedestrian deaths in 2024, the highest since 2007, reflecting a setback in its Vision Zero initiative, which has not been renewed since 2021. Walk SF's executive director, Jodie Medeiros, stated that the lack of progress on Vision Zero represents a collective leadership failure. This incident is particularly alarming as it marks the first pedestrian fatality this year involving someone younger than 70, contrasting with previous deaths involving elderly victims.
