'764' threat FBI says predators targeting kids on video games, social media in Bay Area and beyond
The FBI has alerted parents to the dangers posed by an international predator network called "764," which uses popular video games to exploit children. Sanjay Virmani, head of the San Francisco FBI, announced the arrests of two leaders, emphasizing that many young victims are at risk. The network specifically targets vulnerable youth, often those struggling with issues like anxiety and depression, through online platforms such as Minecraft and social media. Victims face severe coercion, including threats to expose sensitive information to family and peers if they refuse demands. The FBI is actively conducting over 250 investigations related to the network across its 55 field offices nationwide.
Furthermore, incidents of "swatting" have been reported, where false emergency calls lead to armed police responses at victims' homes. This alarming trend highlights the urgent need for parental awareness and monitoring of children's online activities. The FBI collaborates with local and state agencies to combat this rising threat effectively.
