Man dies trying to save dog from SF Ocean Beach surf, fire department says
A man died after attempting to rescue his dog from the surf at Ocean Beach in San Francisco on Thursday afternoon. Witnesses reported seeing the middle-aged man enter the water near Lawton Street around 2:08 p. m. He collapsed for unknown reasons while in the surf, leading two women to pull him out and call 911. National Park Service responders arrived within two minutes and provided CPR, followed by San Francisco firefighters who assisted in the rescue.
Despite these life-saving measures, the man died at the hospital, while his dog swam to safety. The incident underscores the risks associated with ocean rescues, particularly in strong surf conditions. Ocean Beach is known for its challenging waves and currents, which can pose significant dangers to swimmers and rescuers alike. Local officials urge caution when entering the water, especially in emergency situations.
