Police Chief Scott resigns from SFPD, going to LA Metro police

San Francisco, CALocal News

Bill Scott will step down as San Francisco Police Chief to lead the newly formed LA Metro transit police force, as revealed in an internal email. He described the opportunity to build the department from the ground up as rare and exciting. Mayor Daniel Lurie announced Scott's resignation during a press conference, underscoring the complexity of the decision. With 27 years of experience at the Los Angeles Police Department, Scott was chosen as SFPD chief amid calls for an insider candidate. His leadership coincided with efforts to implement 272 recommendations from the California Department of Justice for police reform, with the department reporting substantial compliance earlier this year.

Paul Yep, Lurie’s policy chief, will assume the role of interim chief. Scott plans to remain in his position until late June to ensure a smooth transition. His departure raises questions about ongoing public safety initiatives in San Francisco.
