Monica Magtotos utility boxes heal the spirit of San Francisco

San Francisco, CALocal News

Monica Magtoto enhances the Mission District with her artwork on 10 utility boxes along Guerrero Street, which serve to house electrical equipment. The designs, painted in vibrant colors, symbolize healing and reflect her multicultural heritage as a fourth-generation San Franciscan. Each utility box features unique imagery, including hearts and butterflies, and aims to resonate with passers-by. Magtoto's work is part of the "Paint the City" initiative, backed by Paint the Void and the Civic Joy Fund, involving 24 artists and 241 utility boxes citywide. Through her art, she expresses a desire to heal the community's spirit following challenging times.

She emphasizes the connection between the physical and spiritual in her artistic approach. Magtoto enjoys the attention her art receives and values the pride her family takes in her work. The project not only beautifies urban spaces but also fosters community engagement and healing.
