UC Berkeley Senior Paralyzed From Waist Down After Fall From Fraternity House Stairway

San Francisco, CALocal News

Bandna Bhatti, a 21-year-old UC Berkeley senior, fell 12 feet from a stairway at the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity house on April 19, resulting in paralysis from the waist down. The fall occurred amid "Cal Day" celebrations, raising concerns about the fraternity's response and the delay in medical assistance, as 911 was not called until seven hours after the incident. Bhatti's injuries are severe, including a spinal fracture, brain hematoma, and other complications, leading to a GoFundMe campaign for her recovery. Her mother described her condition, emphasizing the emotional toll as Bhatti questions her ability to graduate. The fraternity's national chapter stated their commitment to prioritizing health and safety while cooperating with investigations.

Additionally, Bhatti's friends are organizing a half-marathon to raise funds, aiming for a $5-per-mile pledge to support her ongoing medical needs. This incident highlights the urgent need for better safety measures and response protocols within university fraternities. It also serves as a reminder of the potential risks associated with campus celebrations.
